Autumnal woods

The day's are slowly getting cooler, and the light rustle of early crisping leaves follow me down the alley way. This time of year where the trees start to shed their coats, always makes me appreciate anew the beauty of raw wood. I find myself gazing at bark and finding inspiration in knots. It would seem I am not the only one.

Here is a small selection of my favorite wooden products.

This coat stand has something almost childlike about it's simplicity, without becoming garish or basic.

 

The Italian designer Marco Stefanelli devised a way of removing fragments from sawmill scraps, tree branches, and cement fragments, and replacing them with sculpted resin which were embedded with LED's, with stunning results. 

This beautiful cabinet is made by Furniture artist John Galvin, using locally sourced elm and beech. 

The colours in this cabinet are beautiful, and the small dash of white adds a contemporary edge. This piece would look great in any home, just make sure that there is no clutter around it, this piece is definitely a stand alone gem.

Recycled fabric lampshades.

Old crochet and lace are being reinvented and turned into these beautiful ethereal lampshades, which will also throw beautiful light onto ceiling and walls.

Here, Lighting becomes a focal point in any space, although these examples lend themselves to a domestic setting rather than a public or commercial space.

OLD MAPS

I had a recent clear out and discovered a pile of old maps my father must have forgotten. It often strikes me when traveling, how Maps could really be considered a work of art. In my opinion, it seems a shame to relegate these large expanses of intricate detail to remain hidden away, only to be used once every 3/4 years when going off on some travels through the south of France.

Here are a few inspirationals that I discovered, and wanted to share in the attempt to get everyone recycling their old maps. Some of these I find quite beautiful, like this first vintage map lamp shade

 

These lampshades are stunning, as well as being a sustainable, unique piece for the home.

I am definately going to be putting one in my gaff!

 

The joy of this idea is that it could be any map and any age, whether vintage or not! It will still look great.

These brilliant street maps are a nice twist on the idea, and add character to the lamp.

Another way in which old maps can be recycled and used in Interior design is this sweet little decorative tree.
